Program note:

The Divertimentoof 2002 was my first concerto for a wind instrument. Since its inception, I have produced concerti for saxophone, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and trombone. I feel comfortable writing for this genre.

The flute concerto took on the shape of a divertissement with its nine movements and contrasting moods. It is a challenging work. I was fortunate to know a wonderful player who was willing to bring the beast to life. I had gotten to know Danilo Mezzadri while he completed graduate degrees in flute performance at Michigan State University. Danilo is a remarkable player. He was able to master the first eight movements quickly. The ninth movement posed insurmountable performance issues, and it was decided to omit it from the premiere performance. Thanks to Danilo’s suggestions, the ninth movement has been rewritten with a more manageable solo part. It is a dashing movement, and I eagerly await a performance opportunity.
