Program note

The Michigan State University Orchestra Program celebrated it 75th anniversary in the academic year 2001-02. I, among others, was invited to compose a fanfare for brass and percussion to open one of the season’s concerts. My offering was titled Spartan Spirit. Upon hearing the fanfare, it occurred to me that it might easily be scored for full band and expanded in its formal design. The version you will hear this evening, A Spartan’s Dream, captures, I believe, the spirit of all true and loyal Spartans.

Jere Hutcheson

Hutcheson has a strong affinity for the symphony band. He credits Leonard Falcone, Kenneth Bloomquist, David Catron, Stanley DeRusha, Eugene Corporon, John Whitwell, John Madden, Wesley Broadnax, Kevin Sedatole, and Cormac Cannon, all Spartan band conductors, some past and some present, with providing support, encouragement, and wonderful performances over the years.
